Sounds come in stages
Sounds made with the lips, like p, b and m, often come early. Sounds that need more control of the tongue, like s, l and r, often come later.
A rough guide
Around 3: most people understand much of what your child says.
Around 4: most people understand almost everything.
School age: the last sounds, like r and th, settle.
When to ask
If your child is hard to understand for their age, or is frustrated about it, a free call is a good next step.
